Published by the Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles (Spanish Railway Foundation), Vía Libre is a specialist magazine dedicated to the railways. The publication exists in print and digital format offering different content. The print edition was first released in January 1964, and by September 2006 had reached its 500th issue. The magazine’s complete collection – with over 35,000 pages – chronicles a wide variety of national and international aspects of railway life, including technology, equipment, services, history, projects, infrastructure, books and engineering, etc.

All Vía Libre’s 500 issues are available in digital form on a double-sided DVD with a search engine to make consultation quick and efficient. The magazine also publishes the Anuario del Ferrocarril (Railway Yearbook) and other publications devoted to rail. The online edition of Vía Libre was launched in 2000 and initially only reproduced the contents of the print edition. Since December 2007 however, www.vialibre.org, which was developed as the rail sector’s information portal for the Spanish-speaking world, has published daily specific content produced expressly for this digital version.
